Glucophage (metformin) is a medication taken orally to manage blood sugar levels in individuals with diabetes.
It is prescribed for those with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Glucophage may be used alongside insulin or other drugs, but it is not intended for type 1 diabetes treatment.
Take Glucophage strictly as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not adjust the dosage or duration without consultation. Adhere to the instructions on your prescription label, as your doctor might alter your dose periodically to ensure optimal results.
Glucophage should be taken with food, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. It is usually recommended to take Glucophage once a day during the evening meal. Follow your physician’s guidance.
Glucophage is just one part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes diet, exercise, and weight management. Consistent use of this medication is essential for maximum benefit. Ensure that you refill your prescription before running out of medication.
If you experience any symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as weakness, increasing drowsiness, slow heart rate, feeling cold, muscle pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, dizziness, or fainting, seek emergency medical assistance. Discontinue Glucophage and seek urgent medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, including hives, breathing difficulties, or swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Contact your doctor immediately if you encounter any serious side effects like difficulty breathing even with slight activity, rapid weight gain or swelling, or fever, chills, and body aches resembling flu symptoms.
Other, milder side effects may also occur, including headaches, weakness, mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain, or muscle discomfort.
